Marketing Innovation: Under Armour

On July 17, top executives from the world’s major sports marketing companies gathered in New York City to honor the best in sports advertising, design and communications at the first-ever Clio Sports Awards. That night, Steve Battista proudly accepted the Brand Innovation Award on behalf of Under Armour, where he serves as senior VP brand creative. Behind the scenes, I know that many of the companies and talents I have had the privilege to work with are also celebrating this monumental win. For example, global creative agency ATTIK provided key support for Under Armour’s launch of Armour39 (wearable tech that helps you track your workout intensity), as did creative production company Shilo… which also produced many of the epic brand films (including the one above) that have made Under Armour’s YouTube Channel must-see TV for serious athletes.

A story by Austin Siegemund-Broka for The Hollywood Reporter chronicles the brand’s growing success, and offers this insight Read more

Shilo’s 2013 holiday journey

Director Anthony Furlong and his colleagues from the Emmy Award-winning creative production company Shilo have created a cinematic holiday card for HBO as shown in this Behind the Scenes presentation embedded above. HBO’s holiday video begins in the home of a family sitting down to watch HBO together, then recreates the network’s renowned 1983 intro by flying through New York and then moving through the vast landscapes of the United States. For Shilo, attention to detail was paramount as they designed and built every New York building to match the original within this updated style. The paper world they created provides a unique holiday twist connecting to cards, gift wrappings and handmade charm. Read more

Creative Entrepreneurs: Shilo’s Jose Gomez

Over the past year, creative production company Shilo and director Jose Gomez took on the challenge of creating a great deal of stunning cinematic content for Qatar TV, as you can see in the montage featured above. After traveling to Qatar to learn more about the culture and people – and make a lot of new friends – Shilo crafted this original HD content and much more for Qatar TV’s on-air identity.

“We were asked to make each promo a metaphor for different aspirational subjects such as education, business, environment and family,” Jose explains. “The main creative challenge was to render these stories in artistic and simple ways that didn’t require further explanation or language. We focused on conveying a feeling and tone for each subject in ways that are abstract and metaphorical but still understandable.” Read more

Great to know: Libby DeLana

Libby DeLana is a founding partner and creative at the next-generation branding firm Mechanica. I had the very good fortune of meeting her when my clients at Shilo first collaborated with Libby, her partners and their clients at Saucony on the inspirational project featured above. Through our exchanges formulating a PR strategy to promote the Saucony “Find Your Strong” campaign, I was exposed to the deep strategic thinking Mechanica invests into its work, as well as many facets of Libby’s personal talents. At the time, her photographs from Shilo’s location shoot blew me away, and since that first introduction, everything I’ve seen and experienced has made me even more of a fan. For a bit more background, check out this 2009 profile of Mechanica from northshore magazine, and I also highly recommend this quick and insightful interview: 7 Habits of Highly Effective Social Marketers: Libby Delana.

Q: What one trait or habit got you to where you are today? A: “A sunny disposition, a fierce belief that just about anything is possible and a touch of discipline.” Read more

Tribute to NYC and its amazing artists

Home to many of our planet’s most talented artists, The City That Never Sleeps is a perpetual inspiration to people all around the world. Director Graham Elliott recently produced a fascinating documentary: His film entitled “New York in Motion” spotlights a unique form of art, and features my friends Jonathan Notaro of Brand New School, Tracy Chandler and Noah Conopask of Shilo, and many other extremely talented individuals and companies. Achievements like these spanning all forms of art are recognized worldwide for their magnificence — and they connect us deeply with countless wonderfully unique New Yorkers. To you all, along with your families, friends and neighbors, we are very grateful for your contributions to our lives, and we are wishing you all the best.
