Promo video primer: 30 first-class examples

Back in 2014, a story from Chris Trimble appeared in the Guardian proclaiming video as the future of content marketing, with this dire warning: “small businesses who ignore it do so at their peril.” Since then, video usage has continued to climb, and more and more people and businesses are trying to engage, entertain and educate us with their on-screen storytelling. Bearing this in mind, I’m very happy to share some of the videos I’ve collected over the past six years working beside some phenomenal storytellers.

For your reference and enlightenment, I have chosen 10 examples apiece for three well-established niches of corporate communications. While most of these videos were designed for business audiences, their creators invested some artistry to try to make them appeal to all of us. Read more

Mark your calendar: High-profile events coming to the USA, Canada and Europe

From the poem “September” by Helen Hunt Jackson (1831-1885): “By all these lovely tokens September days are here, with summer’s best of weather, and Autumn’s best of cheer.”

I hope the loveliness of the season is reaching you and inspiring your own good cheer. As I write this, the following events are right around the corner – some involving my clients (the illustrious Erin Sarofsky is now visiting Paris for the very first time, preparing to present at Motion Plus Design), and some pulling hard on my own aspirations to get out, see and experience new things, and make new friends. Perhaps something here will inspire you, too; Read more

Join the fun at FITC FORM Fest, 2-3 Nov. in Chicago

FITC has a 14-year history of uniting leading design and technology professionals and students in Amsterdam, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seoul, Tokyo, Toronto and other major international cities, but its last event to hit Chicago was back in 2008. On Nov. 2-3, a brand new Chicago-centric event conceived and produced under the auspices of FITC and its founding director Shawn Pucknell will take place at the Chicago History Museum. Entitled FORM Fest, the conference is aiming to be a landmark gathering of digital creators and technologists who are passionate about creating innovative work.

The impressive line-up of speakers includes bona-fide design-industry stars from elsewhere – like Stefan Sagmeister, GMUNK, Jared Ficklin and Rama Allen – but also local heavyweights like Erin Sarofsky, Jason White (Leviathan), Kim Alpert, Chuck Anderson and Chicago Design Museum’s executive director Tanner Woodford, among many others. Other featured speakers include Anton + Irene, Nicholas Felton, Jason Peterson of Havas Worldwide, Carlos Segura of Segura, Inc., and Anthony Vitagliano of Digital Kitchen.

Alpert and White are both past FITC speakers, and with support from conceptual design company Leviathan, they worked closely with FITC to create FORM and custom-tailor it for Chicago’s booming creative community. Read more
