Finding Opportunities in Mobility
Scott Darnell loved driving big trucks and fast cars before a diving accident left him paralyzed. “When I woke up, they told me the only option for me was a full-size van,” Darnell said. “I was kind of bummed with that so immediately I started thinking about different ways that I could get myself in and out of different vehicles.” Darnell’s solution was the DMS series of wheelchair lifts produced by his company, Further Options in Greenville, Ill., that let anyone in a wheelchair drive whatever vehicle they’d like. “What we were running up against is I didn’t want a vehicle that looked like it was for the disabled, I wanted a vehicle that looked just like anybody else’s, that I could modify just like anybody else’s,” Darnell said. “My first truck [with the DMS] was a Dodge Ram that we had on airbags and everything else and it would drop down almost to the ground. Now I’m in a new full-size Chevy Silverado.” Regardless of how they were injured, disabled car enthusiasts and every-day drivers like Darnell are looking for products to help them with the mechanics of driving or riding in a vehicle, and to spiff those vehicles up. Aftermarket retailers are finding ways to meet all of those needs...

Take
A Closer Look
David Gotter
and Scott Darnell established Further OPTIONS in 2003 to develop innovative
vehicle entry systems, and other breakthrough products, for wheelchair-bound
individuals. Gotter also owns and operates two successful machine shops,
D & R Machine and Alton Machine Works, and stemming from his experiences
growing up with a younger sister who was confined to a chair, he brings
a heartfelt desire to help people in wheelchairs enjoy all that life has
to offer. Darnell suffered a life-altering spinal cord injury in 1991,
and as a C-5/6 quadriplegic, has pursued his dream of helping create important
new mobility options for others in wheelchairs. Having met at their local
place of worship, over the past three years, with a great deal of support
from many friends and family-members, the two men have persevered in bringing
their first patent-pending product to market....

Never underestimate
what a dream can do for a person. As a teenager, Scott Darnell of
Greenville was an avid athlete and even more interested in cars.
He could have been described as the All-American Boy. At six feet,
five inches, Darnell was a good all around athlete. He earned letters
in three sports, football, baseball and basketball. But his real
love was away from the field and the court. It was underneath the hood
of a car....

Case Study: Further OPTIONS, Inc.
..Challenge..
The specialty automotive industry represents an exploding marketplace –
where sales for 2005 exceeded $30 billion. To tap their share, the best
players – ranging from all the major automotive manufacturers down to regional
shop-owners specializing in vehicle customizations and accessories – employ
proactive sales and marketing tactics, with the goal of driving customer
purchases. Naturally, it’s a marketplace where the playing field can be
quite fierce. In one of its niches, approximately 100,000 vehicles are
sold each year that are then modified for drivers with various disabilities…
and adaptive mobility systems are in increasing demand....
