New National Geographic series: “The Story of God”

A Rabbi (Deborah Schuldenfrei), a Pastor (Toure Roberts) and an Imam (Jihad Turk) walk into a bar… or in this case, a diner. The subject of their conversation is “The Story of God” – the new National Geographic Channel series starring Morgan Freeman – and the big question, “Who is God?” Here are some of the answers they offer in this promo for the series, released last week.

Inspiration from scientist Sean Carroll

Sean Carroll is a scientist and self-proclaimed truth vigilante who is leading some very important new discussions on the subject of naturalism and the meaning of life. Here’s a quote of his to whet your appetite: “The world keeps happening in accordance with its rules; it’s up to us to make sense of it and give it value.” His website is http://preposterousuniverse.com.

Below I am sharing more of the transcript from the phenomenal video I’m embedding above. To me it’s a fascinating lesson, and one that would have thrilled Mr. Kiefert, the creator of this website.

Excerpted from Sean Carroll’s “The Meaning of Life” (all rights reserved by the original copyright holder).

The world is one thing, the natural world, and it can be understood. This is very counter-intuitive; it is not at all obvious, this naturalism claim. You are made of atoms; you are made of cells which are made of molecules which are made of atoms, and as physicists, we know how atoms behave. The laws of physics covering the behavior of atoms are completely understood: You put an atom in a certain set of circumstances, you tell me what the circumstances are, as a physicist I will tell you what the atoms will do.

If you believe that the atoms that are inside your brain and your body act differently because they are in a living person than if they are in a rock or a crystal, then what you are saying is that the laws or physics are wrong. That they need to be altered because of the influence of a spirit or a soul or something like that. That may be true. Science can’t disprove that… but there is no evidence for it. And you get a much stronger explanatory framework by assuming that it’s just atoms obeying the laws of physics.

Paul’s Five Stage Model In the Development of Rational Consciousness by William C. Kiefert

The idea of stages in consciousness has existed since antiquity. Hindu models begin with the householder stage and end with Moksha. The Buddha teaches the five noble truths. Islam teaches the five Nafs. And today, Abraham Maslow, Teithard deChardin, Joseph Campbell, and many other psychologists teach what are, in principle, similar models.

Unlike others who base stages of consciousness on historical, spiritual, or moral development, St. Paul alone bases his model on rational development. Paul knew that everything is one. He, therefore, understood that what we call spiritual or heart-felt thoughts are what we could today call undeveloped nonjudgmental rational thoughts. Understanding the modern theory of reality is the key to Stage IV in Paul’s five stage model of rational consciousness because it justifies a nonjudgmental system of logical laws, and in turn, nonjudgmental reasoning and a consciousness of oneness.

Bridging Science and Religion in Three Steps by William C. Kiefert

Just as waves and particles are different dimensions of light, science and religion are different dimensions of one reality. To construct a bridge between science and religion, we must FIRST recognize that we cannot logically understand both within the same system of logical laws any more than we can understand waves in terms we use to explain particles.

Just in case this has not yet come to your attention, it’s my sincere pleasure to introduce you to SoulPancake.com, a high-minded mission from Rainn Wilson, Devon Gundry, Shabnam Mogharabi, Golriz Lucina and a bunch of their creative friends.

“We want to make discussions about Spirituality, Creativity, and Philosophy cool again. Were they ever cool? I have no idea. But it seems like a good idea. We want to engage the user to “Chew on Life’s Big Questions”™. (I was kidding about the ™ symbol; you can use that phrase however you want. Even to sell frozen taquitos.) Where do you go on the Interwebs if you want an irreverent, fun, and profound take on God and Art and the Soul and Faith and Beauty? Fox.com? Maybe. But maybe also here at SoulPancake.com.

Gnostic knowledge

Originally contributed on March 22, 2005.

Hello. I’m new to this group and would like to introduce myself.  As you can see from my member name, it’s Sandy.  I have taken an increasing interest in Gnosticism.  I’ll be honest, my interest all started about a year ago after reading the infamous book “The Da Vinci Code”….lol.  A book I thoroughly enjoyed, BTW.  From that point on, I went on an adventure to read everything I could about Mary Magdalene, Jesus, the Priory Sion, etc.  So now in my little library of paperbacks I have several books, “Holy Blood, Holy Grail”, “The Messianic Legacy”, “The Gospel of Mary”, two books by Elaine Pagels, “The Gnostic Gospels”, “Beyond Belief-The secret Gospel of Thomas” (both books which I have read and really liked.)  I also have another book by Mrs. Pagels “Adam, Eve and the Serpent”, which I have yet to read.  The Gospel of Thomas really interests me, so I am currently reading “The Gnostic Gospel of St. Thomas- Meditations on the Mystical Teachings” by Tau Malachi.  I throughly enjoy this book, because it takes the Gospel verse by verse and gives some very interesting interpretations of each verse.

I have had an interest in Astrology and Metaphysics for several years now, too.

On the right track, or not?

To stimulate thoughts and conversations, it’s my pleasure to share this 2004 exchange from our message board between Ron Matrisch and Dave Stoverden.

From Ron Matrisch: My reason for joining this group was to find others that think like I do. All of the text that the “church” has banned or tried to hide from the world such as the Gnostic text sparks my interest. In my opinion the “church” has done its best to keep its power and control, and anything that takes that power away from them is considered (by them) not of God. Instead of teaching the truth they give us half truths and outright lies. It does say that in the end times that knowledge will be increased. I say it will be the truth that has been hidden from us all of these years.

From Dave Stoverden: Absolutely right Revron8. But when you speak of “truth” I get kinda uneasy

ONE The Movie is compared to The Secret as holding a key to life’s meaning. ONE reaches the soul with the magic of The Secret. This video featues a commentary on the Meaning of Life by people featured in the full movie. www.onetheproject.com

ONE takes the viewer on a remarkable journey toward self-reflection and greater consciousness. It powerfully provides a clear direction to today’s mantra for change.
