a52 SHINES IN DETAILS OF NEW INFINITI G35
BROADCAST CAMPAIGN FROM TBWA\CHIAT\DAY
AND DIRECTOR RUPERT SANDERS

HOLLYWOOD – Clio-winning Los Angeles visual effects company a52 today detailed their visual effects work for Omaha Pictures and director Rupert Sanders for TBWA/Chiat/Day LA’s new Infiniti G35 campaign  featuring the “Seasons” and “Snow Chains” :30 spots which are currently airing nationwide on spot TV and national cable.

The stylish spots which broke at the end of Nov. launch Infiniti’s intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD) feature on the 2004 G35 sedan.  “Snow Chains” features a fleet of generic vehicles with snow chains clanking noisily over the dry pavement of city streets as the new G35 smoothly glides along without them... and “Seasons” shows the G35 driving down a road as weather conditions dramatically change from rain to sunshine to snow, then ends with a timelapse shot of the vehicle showing the same range of weather.  In both spots, voiceover artist Liev Schreiber punctuates the clear benefits of the constantly adjusting AWD system.

“Knowing that Rupert and his D.P. Jess Hall intended to capture most of their effects in-camera, we focused on working with the production from the earliest planning stages to ensure that the effects would integrate seamlessly,” said Darcy Leslie Parsons, a52’s executive producer.  To ensure this, a52’s creative director Simon Brewster, producer Scott Boyajan and on-set visual effects supervisor Westley Sarokin actively participated in pre-production and location filming for both spots.

Of the two spots, “Seasons” required the most effort from a52’s team.  That spot’s weather transition from rain to sun consists of two scenes – one shot in the rain and the other in the sun – and each separate scene was filmed from a camera mounted on another vehicle.  Simon Brewster focused his attention on that transition, using Discreet Inferno to accomplish the visual feats necessary to remove telephone poles, freeze vehicles and make splashing puddles conform to continuity.

“This shot is actually a combination of two separate rig shots, many mattes and splash pools, and a52 worked to make the transition seamless and ‘magical,’” confirmed Sybil Hadfield, TBWA\Chiat\Day’s senior producer for this campaign.  “They were with us every step of the way to be sure that this transition and combining of rig shots was perfectly composed.”

a52 artists Marguerite Cargill and Scott Johnson also contributed their talents to both campaign spots.

In addition to Sybil Hadfield, the team for TBWA/Chiat/Day also included executive creative director Rob Schwartz, creative director Tor Myhren, art directors Michael Butterworth and Bill Hornstein, copywriter Eric Arnold and assistant producer Carrie Schaer.

Production was overseen by Omaha Pictures’ executive producer Eric Stern and also included producer Paul McPadden.  Telecine was handled by colorist Beau Leon at The Syndicate in Santa Monica.  The editorial team from Santa Monica’s The White House consisted of editor Neil Smith, executive producer Sue Dawson and producer Corina Dennison.

The music for “Seasons” was composed by Cyrus Melchor and the sound was designed by Gus Koven – both of Santa Monica’s Stimmüng, where Ceinwyn Clark is executive producer.  Jimmy Hite at Margarita Mix de Santa Monica mixed the final audio.
